Happy New Year!!

1 Jan

072_12131_fullHappy New Year!! 2015 was a CRAZY year, both personally and for the business! Hubby (the cute one, pictured here) was gone for the first part of the year (which was only half of the the deployment) and I was discovering San Diego on my own, with my baby puppy Widdle. The last half has been a whirlwind, including losing Widdle, getting two new baby puppies, Wicket and Weechee, moving to a new place, much more exploring, and becoming a member of Spanish Village and figuring out what to do with my business. At the beginning of the year, I was going to pursue photojournalism, but I had no idea that I would get the opportunity to be one of the artists at Spanish Village! I am excited to continue to photograph the things that I love the most, and for 2016, the current plan is to expand into product photography. I love capturing interesting details, angles, etc. when I take photos, so I would love to be able to use my perspective to try to take great photos of people’s products!

This is me sorta making New Year’s resolutions, because I’ve never been into that. So it’s my business goal for the year; product photography! My other goal is to enjoy life as much this year as last year, and even more!  I am also going to try to be better at posting on here. 🙂  I hope all of you had wonderful 2015’s and have even better 2016’s ahead!

Thank you to Robyn Icks Photography for the amazing photo!

Barrio Logan

16 Sep

So I decided that I was going to go to each neighborhood in San Diego, and take photos of everything that looked cool.  I made it through one neighborhood so far (and it was the easiest one on the list), with the exception of La Jolla, which I have been working on slowly.  At least I finally edited the photos though, right?  Barrio Logan is an interesting neighborhood, and I haven’t been here long enough to really know much about it.  I don’t want to say much for fear of being wrong about anything, but it seems to have a thriving art community.  It also has (as you can quite obviously see) TONS of murals, which I love.  It’s quite beautiful, although the neighborhood still looks pretty poor.  It’s an interesting contrast, but I love all the character it has.  I also love all the effort “they” (whoever “they” are) are putting into it.  It will be interesting to see the future of Barrio Logan.

Spanish Village Art Center

18 Aug

spanish village (1 of 6)I updated my business address on Facebook to show that I am located at Spanish Village Art Center! I have been setting up there on and off for a few weeks now. I love it! I am trying to be there Tuesdays, Fridays, and then either Saturday or Sunday. For those of you that actually want to seek me out, I am going to try to tweet the days that I will be here, because I don’t want to crowd this page with those posts. Find me on twitter here or @bluelily52

Thank you all for your support, and I can’t wait to see you at Spanish Village! 🙂

News!! Exciting news!!

Here is a photo that I just printed to sell, to catch your attention :)

Here is a photo that I just printed to sell, to catch your attention 🙂

Alright, first off, I haven’t been doing much (well, anything really) for about a month.  I mean, photography/business-wise; I’ve been doing quite a lot of other things.  My husband came home from deployment a month ago, and I had a bunch of business craziness right before that, so I took a break to get ready for him to come home, and I guess I’ve been on vacation pretty much since then. 🙂  It’s about time to get going again, as I will hopefully be starting a new “chapter” (I hate clichés, but oh well) ASAP!  This also relates to my craziness a month ago, which leads me to…

I have been accepted into the Spanish Village Art Center at Balboa Park!! I applied in April-ish, and the jury was May 30, right after my RAW show, and right before my husband came home.  So I knew since then, but I just haven’t posted anything.  I am still waiting on one more thing so I can start selling there, which is maybe good that it has taken so long, so that I got my nice little break.  I did buy a couple more things to get my set-up prepared, so I worked a TINY bit, but I don’t really need to do anything else until I actually start selling photos there, so I’m just waiting on my last piece.  Hopefully it will come soon!  I’m REALLY hoping for next week, because I really want to get started out there!

For you San Diego people or people that are familiar with Balboa Park/Spanish Village, you probably understand how excited I am about this.  If you have no idea what it is, it is an AMAZING opportunity.  I posted before about how I was going to look into becoming a photojournalist, but this opportunity actually gives me the chance to do what I’ve been doing all along, and do what I love most, which is taking photos of whatever I want to take photos of, and selling them.  Balboa Park is basically tourist central of San Diego, besides the beaches.  And since San Diego is already a pretty tourist-y area, that’s a very high traffic location for me.  I will be just setting up on the patio, so while setting up and taking down every day isn’t exactly my favorite thing to do, I get to just sell photos pretty much whenever I want to.  I have no idea how it will go, but it has AMAZING potential and is basically the best chance I personally can think of to do what I want to do, but do it full time and possibly actually be able to make a living off of it.  And I’m still my own boss!  I was sooooo worried I wasn’t going to be accepted, because the opportunity seems too good to be true.  Like I said, I hope I get that last piece so I can start selling there and see how it actually goes!

I am not sure what days I will be there yet, but I am going to try to be there most days.  If I work out a set schedule, I will post it on here.  Hopefully any of you that are in the area will come visit me though!

RAW San Diego

20 May

artist_flyer_ee5cf7b331986d28036d438f43eea784I’m a bit late on posting this, since it’s happening TOMORROW!!…Time has been flying by though!  If any of you have been following me/my blog for a while, you know that I did a RAW show in Portland last year.  Since I did that show, I get an “out of state” show for free, as a perk.  Which worked out fantastically, since I moved to San Diego not too long after my show in Portland. 🙂  I have been working on building up my arsenal (ha) of San Diego photos, and I’m pretty excited that I have a bunch now (that I also need to post on here).  I have several canvases, but I also just started making some normal prints for this show.  I was mounting them on wood blocks before, but I don’t currently have the space to do that, and I am working on figuring out how to get the wood blocks now.  We’ll see if I decide to do that again.  For now, though, I have 8×10″ and 11×14″ prints, at what I think are pretty darn good prices. 🙂

The show will be at the House of Blues in San Diego, 6-10pm May 21.  Details on the photo to the right, and I linked the photo to my artist profile page where you can get tickets if you would like to attend the show.  The one I went to in Portland was a lot of fun, and I hear there will be an aerial performance artist at this one, so it should be SUPER awesome!

The photos below are my new stuff/what I will have at the show, with the exception of the canvases.  I got new business cards from MOO.com with my updated info, my new Square reader that is a chip reader (yay technology!), and my new prints in their new print rack for display, as well as my cute boxes that I put old 6×6″ and 8×10″ photos in that I’m clearancing out for $1 and $5 each, respectively.  They are mainly Portland photos.

If you are in San Diego, please come visit me and check it out! 🙂

Balboa Park

1 Feb

Balboa Park is probably my absolute favorite.  It’s huge, and beautiful, and amazing.  There are so many museums and other random things (I haven’t explored them all yet, so I don’t know what they are yet) in there.  I am working on slowly exploring the whole thing.  I posted photos from a vintage car expo previously, and I already have two more sets of photos to come from this particular visit.  They have free museums on Tuesdays, and I plan to work my way through all of them, as well as explore the entire park.  I am so excited!  It’s definitely worth a visit.  These photos are just photos I took while walking around.  The next sets will be of the International Houses and an orchid show.

San Diego Bay Parade of Lights

4 Jan

First off, I’m super excited that my camera is awesome enough to take night photos of moving things (boats), even though they weren’t moving that fast.  This camera is a MAJOR upgrade over my last camera, and it makes me happy every day.  So, may I present to you the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, aka Christmas boats (what I call it).  And for anyone in the area (next year), I highly recommend watching them from Coronado, since you get the lovely view of the city in the background.  Of note – one of these is not a boat but a person on a decked out bike that passed in front of us several times, if you can spot him.

As always, click on any of the photos to view them larger.

Happy Holidays!

3 Jan

I’ve been bad at posting, so I figured I should post these photos before it was TOO far past Christmas…they are my “Merry Christmas from San Diego and Portland!” photos. 🙂  I hope you all had wonderful holidays and enjoyed them, however you spent them!

Additionally, I have an announcement!  I had an epic realization yesterday; that what I choose to do normally in life – go to EVERYTHING I can go to (fun events, restaurants, locations, etc.) and take photos of all of it – is exactly what newspaper photographers do.  I’m currently in love with the newspaper in San Diego (U-T San Diego), they’re fantastic.  So my goal is to get a job doing that, ideally for them, or if I can do that freelance too, that’s fine.  What actually started all of this was my email from San Diego Fashion Week about ways to get involved, and one of them was to get a press pass.  I’m sure I could get one if I actually worked for the newspaper, but I can also get one just as a blogger, so what I am going to do is to continue to do what I do, but I will actually be more proactive about it and ESPECIALLY more proactive about posting them on here.  So this blog will start getting a lot more posts about awesome stuff in San Diego!  Please follow, if you aren’t already, so I will be deemed worthy enough to get a press pass to Fashion Week!  That is my goal for 2015, my resolution if you will, and I would DIE to have one.  Thank you all so much for your support!christmas (1 of 1)-2christmas (1 of 1)
